Clues by Sam
Twenty suspects, each criminal or innocent, and a game that will not let you guess. It suits anyone who likes rules applied strictly: every mark has to be proven from what you already know, and the puzzles get harder as the week goes on.
Murdle
A daily murder with jokes in it. You cross off suspects, weapons, locations, and motives on a logic grid until one answer is left. The daily is free, and the same kind of puzzle fills a bestselling book series if you would rather solve on paper.
Mystery-o-matic
A new murder in the same mansion every day, solved from where everyone was and when. Switch to the mode where the killer may lie and it becomes a test of which testimony to trust.
Deductionary
No crime and no story, just a small grid and a list of clues about where ten letters belong. The reasoning is detective work in miniature, and every wrong placement costs you, so care beats speed.
Daily Holmes
This is ours. A new scene every midnight UTC, usually a room someone lives in, and one question about the person or about what happened there. Nothing in the picture is marked as a clue: you decide what counts, then answer in the day's format, which might be a written reading, finding the object, ordering events, or picking the lie among three statements. A longer case on a computer
Return of the Obra Dinn
By Lucas Pope, released in 2018. In 1807 a merchant ship drifts into Falmouth with damaged sails and no visible crew, and you board it as an insurance investigator for the East India Company. The store page calls it a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction. Your job is to account for a ship that came home without its people. Paid, on Steam.
The Case of the Golden Idol
From Color Gray Games, published by Playstack in October 2022. It sets out twelve strange and gruesome deaths and, in its own words, lets you build your own theory: pick the suspect, deduce the motive. There is a free demo on Steam, which is the honest way to find out whether its style of deduction suits you before you pay for the full game.
An evening at the table
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective
The publisher, Space Cowboys, calls it the cooperative investigation game: the whole table works one case together. The cases come in standalone boxes, among them The Thames Murders and other cases and Jack the Ripper and West End Adventures, and a free demo case can be downloaded from the publisher's site. It suits a group that enjoys reading aloud and arguing over one shared case.
Hunt A Killer
A box of evidence arrives in the mail (documents, photographs, locked tins) and you work out who the killer is, alone or with up to six people. The company sells standalone games, says there are no apps involved, and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. It is the most physical option here: the evidence is on your kitchen table.
How to choose
- If you have minutes, not hours, start with a browser daily. There is nothing to install, and the habit is the point: a small case every morning trains more than a big one every month.
- If you have a weekend, pick one of the two computer games, and try the Golden Idol demo first.
- If you want company, Consulting Detective and Hunt A Killer are made for a table of people. For two, play the same daily puzzle and compare notes afterwards.
