Deductive Reasoning Exercises: 10 Drills to Run Today

Ten concrete drills, from syllogisms to the Wason task, that you can run with paper, a timer, and one photograph.


The fastest way to train deductive reasoning is short daily drills: syllogism sorting, the Wason selection task, logic grids, and observation-inference chains from photographs. Ten exercises follow, with a printable practice set and a daily routine.

Reading about logic builds no more skill than reading about push-ups builds muscle. Deduction, moving from evidence to conclusion without skipping steps, changes only with repetition and feedback. The exercises below run with paper, a pencil, and a timer, ordered roughly from pure logic to evidence handling. Strictly speaking, most detective-style reasoning is abduction, inference to the best explanation, a distinction we cover in deduction vs induction vs abduction; the training stack is the same either way.

The exercises

1. Syllogism sorting

Deduction moves from a general rule to a particular case, and its failure modes have names. Take one everyday rule: if it rained overnight, the pavement is wet. Write the four inferences it invites. It rained, so the pavement is wet: valid. The pavement is dry, so it did not rain: valid, the contrapositive. The other two readings, wet-so-it-rained and no-rain-so-dry, are the classic fallacies, affirming the consequent and denying the antecedent. The drill: take five if-then rules from your own day and mark all four inferences of each.

2. The Wason selection task

In 1966 the psychologist Peter Wason built a four-card puzzle that has embarrassed clever people ever since. Each card carries a letter on one side and a number on the other; the table shows E, K, 4, and 7. The rule to test: if a card has a vowel on one side, it has an even number on the other. Which cards must you turn over? Most people choose E and 4. The answer is E and 7: the rule breaks only when a vowel hides an odd number, which E or 7 could do, while the 4 proves nothing, since the rule never said what even numbers must carry. Fewer than one in ten of Wason's subjects solved it, yet recast as a drinking-age rule, nearly everyone checks the right cards at once: the beer drinker and the sixteen-year-old. The drill: when you test any rule, recast it as a social rule someone could cheat, and ask who could be cheating.

3. The logic-grid method

The logic grid is the workhorse of deduction practice: a few categories, a handful of clues, one consistent solution. Read every clue once before marking anything, then work in passes: an X wherever a clue excludes a pairing, a dot wherever it confirms one, and every dot fills its row and column with automatic X marks. When you stall, re-read the clues in order; clues that said nothing early speak once the grid fills. Never mark on a hunch. For daily material, Murdle, G. T. 4. Observation-inference chains

Abstract drills miss the hard part of real reasoning: deciding what counts as evidence. Take any photograph of a lived-in space and divide a page into two columns, observation on the left, inference on the right, ten entries. Each left-hand entry must be genuinely visible, not a conclusion in disguise: an expensive coffee grinder is an observation, coffee snob is not. Each right-hand entry must pass the because test: say it aloud with the observation attached, and strike it if the sentence embarrasses you. 5. Kim's game

6. The contrapositive flip

Every rule of the form if P then Q is equivalent to exactly one other statement: if not Q, then not P. It is not equivalent to its converse, and most everyday reasoning errors are converse errors. Collect five if-then rules from signs, policies, and manuals each day, and write the contrapositive of each. If the seal is broken, do not use it, becomes: if you may use it, the seal is unbroken.

7. The falsification pass

Borrowed from the Wason lesson, and from Holmes's habit of attacking his own theories. When you reach a conclusion you like, name the one observation that would disprove it before accepting it, then go look. Written form: I believe X. X is false if Y. I checked Y. The discipline is naming Y before you look. A conclusion you have tried and failed to kill is worth ten you merely decorated with support.

8. The elimination room

Pick any room you can see. Propose three different occupations for the person who uses it most, in writing. Now find visible evidence that eliminates two. This inverts the habit of gathering support for an early favorite and teaches the detective's real method: not proving one story, making the alternatives untenable.

  • Place twelve small objects on a tray. Study them for one minute, cover them, then list every object with one detail each.
  • Collect five if-then rules from signs or manuals today. Write the contrapositive of each, and check you have not written the converse instead.
  • Write one thing you believe about a person or place. Name the single observation that would disprove it. Go and look.
  • Pick a room you can see. Propose three occupations for its main user, then find visible evidence that eliminates two.
  • List three objects missing from your kitchen that a stranger would expect. Write what each absence says about how you live.
  • Study a photograph of a stranger's space. Write a two-sentence conclusion, each sentence backed by named, visible evidence. Have someone check you.

A routine that holds
